The Budgie Police Car Wolseley 6/80 Police car manufactured in the 1950s and early '60s. Early versions in the more decorative box made by Morestone and stamped underneath 'WOLSELEY SIX-EIGHTY. MADE IN ENGLAND'. Later Budgie versions in the yellow box stamped 'WOLSELEY POLICE CAR. BUDGIE TOYS' and have a white-on-blue Police plate across grille and a neater aerial. Some later Budgies have a similar Police plate across the boot lid too. In 1982 Budgie Seener Ltd resurrected the model but 'modernised' it's image by deleting the bell, loudhailers and the centre bar of the split windscreen, equipping the car instead with roof-mounted spotlights and blue light where the aerial was. The Dinky Saab 96 In September 1966, the Mecanno Magazine announced the introduction of a new model numbered 156. The SAAB 96 would replace the Rover 75, which had been in production between 1954-1959. Finished in a vibrant metallic Carmine Red, the 98 mm (3 7/8") long vehicle featured opening doors, windows, suspension, chrome spun hubs, screen wipers and a rear view mirror. Doors, detailed on the inside allowed access to the cabin space, with its steering wheel and forward folding white seating. This seating faithfully reflected the robust seating in the actual car. The model appears to be available only in the metallic Carmine finish. However, rumours of the existence of an extremely rare, blue version persist and are hinted at by some repainted and restored examples. Priced, in the 1969 Dinky catalogue at 7/11, the original cost may have been 6/11. The model was withdrawn in 1971.

The Mecanno magazine article suggested that the model's red colour was typical of the only coloured SAAB 96s that the author had seen on road vehicles. In fact, white was as popular in the production cars and the red colour was linked to Erik Carlsson's Monte Carlo Rallye winning cars from 1962 and 1963, numbered 303 and 283 respectively. Known as 'On the Roof Carlsson' because of the alleged frequency with which his car came to rest in that position, this champion rally driver was born in 1929, at Trollh�tten, in Sweden, near the home of SAAB cars, where he became their chief driver. He married the late Pat Moss, an outstanding rally champion in her own right, not just the sister of racing legend Sir Sterling Moss. Powered by a 941 cc, longitudinally mounted, 3-cylinder, two-stroke engine, the car had an unusual centrifugal clutch and three carburettors - one for each cylinder. The rarest in 1960 had spun hubs. The Hillman was first issued with the upper colour covering the air vents in front of the windscreen. A variation, less common, has the upper scheme ending at the base of the windscreen pillar.

The Dinky Dodge Royal Sedan Released in March 1959 with a UK price of 3/6 (6/- in Australia), the price was reduced in May 1959 to 3/5, but increased back to 3/6 in May 1961. Twelve months later the price had risen to 3/8, a price that remained thus for the rest of its production life. The Dodge made its last appearance in the January 1966 catalogue, and with no mention of it in the July edition, it can be assumed that production had already been terminated. The French Dinky Peugeot 403 Berline In the 1956 French Dinky catalogue, they announced the introduction of the black painted, Peugeot 403 Berline (saloon), 24B to replace the Citroën Traction. When the model appeared in June, to a large advertising campaign in the Meccano Magazine, the bodywork was painted the second colour available, mid-blue. The new model appeared on the magazine’s back page spread throughout the summer months in support of the article that featured in the June edition (p. 19). The advertising campaign was huge for the replacement of the iconic Citroën, French Dinky’s most popular model. The 1957 catalogue showed the new model painted grey and from 1958-1961, the mid-blue version illustrated catalogues. When the model was renumbered, as 521 and now with windows, the sand cream, yellow model featured.

The detailed, 104mm long mode, at a 1:43 scale, cost 205 old francs, about 4/- and although without windows until 1961, the model featured chrome concave wheel hubs and smooth white or black tyres.

The Peugeot 403 Berline made its debut on 20th April, 1955, at the Trocadero Palace, in Paris. Peugeot manufactured the 403 Berline at the Sochaux plant, near Mulhouse, between 1955 and 1966. In the months before the launch, un-badged versions of the vehicle were driven around the streets of Sochaux, virtually unnoticed by motoring journalists who rarely ventured to this quiet part of France. The vehicle proved extremely reliable. The car came in three engine sizes; 1290cc, 1468cc and as an 1816cc diesel. The car had a four-speed gearbox, with a column change. The car included a sunroof and newly introduced, safer, radial tyres as standard fittings. Although initially fitted with traficators on the pillars between the front and rear doors, these were soon replaced by flashing indicators. Over 1 million 403s rolled off the production line, making the car Peugeot’s first to break through the 1 million mark. In 1966, Peugeot replaced the 403 with the even more successful 404.

The French Dinky Plymouth Belvedere In August 1957, The French Meccano Magazine announced the introduction of the Plymouth Belvedere Coupé, 24D. The 110mm long model of the American import cost 320 old francs, about 6/3. The car came in two colour schemes; green and black or grey and tomato red. (rare versions exist in two-tone metallic dark brown upper and sides; and light brown body. The rarest, white upper and sides with light blue body.) also in Both versions had ‘chrome’, steel ribbed hubs and smooth white tyres. During 1959, the model was re-numbered 523 and the hubs changed to the concave, spun type. The model was deleted in 1961.

Based upon the 1956 model of the Plymouth Belvedere, the Chrysler Corporation introduced the car as the second generation of the vehicle. The car represent the first of a new style by Virgil Exner and featured push-button automatic transmission, seat belts and huge tail fins, which became even bigger in the 1957 model. The car came with a range of V8 engines and six body types, including a coupé, which became the inspiration behind the French Dinky model.

The French Dinky Peugeot 402 saloon In 1939, French Dinky launched the Peugeot 402 taxi, 24L. Without a baseplate, the first issue of the model provided details of its manufacture on the ceiling, “Dinky Toys, Peugeot 402, Fabrique En France, Par MECCANO”. During the immediate post-war era, the model relied upon metal wheels, although from 1947, the model had 17mm diameter rubber tyres. From 1947, the model also had a baseplate, a sheet-metal floor. The fine casting of the 94mm long, Peugeot 402 taxi, allowed the headlights, mounted behind the radiator grille on the actual vehicle, to be identifiable on the model; the taxi being 1mm long than 24K, the sedan. The model’s colour range included yellow, blue, red and brown, with the two colour models only appearing in brown and cream or royal blue and yellow. The taximeter attached through a hole on the right side of the model was in black, with white and red markings. The front bumper was similarly fixed through a hole at the front. Rear axles have reinforced mountings and above them on each side of the model, Peugeot’s Lion, with its flowing mane, is on each wing. Pre-war versions had white tyres marked, ‘Dunlop’. Boxes for this model remain rare, with many disappearing during the war years. In 1939, the model cost 6.25 old francs, which reduced to 5, 50 fr. in the post-war years, 13/6 reducing to 11/6.

Launched at the Paris Motor Show, in 1935, Peugeot manufactured the actual vehicle at their Sochaux plant, near the Swiss border. Peugeot produced approximately 75,000 of these large family cars, which were well-suited to their use as a taxi. Between 1935 -38, the 4-door sedan had a straight-4, 1991 cc engine, which Peugeot up-graded to 2142 cc engine, between 1938-42. The car’s all steel body and stream-lined design made the model a popular family car. Production ceased in 1942.

The French Dinky Simca 5 Topolino In 1939, French Dinky launched the 60mm long Simca 5, Topolino, (35a). The casting at a scale of 1:55 moulded details of the model into its one piece shell. With either white of black hubs and rubber tyres, the model cost 125 fr. (old francs), about 2/6. Between 1940 and 1948, the price remained, even though the wheels became black metal. After 1948, the black wheel hubs had solely black tyres. The bodywork, doors, hatches, vents, grille and headlights are embossed. Ultimately, the Simca 5, Topolino, was deleted in 1949.

Designed by Fiat and known in Italy as the Topolino, the Franco-Italian, SIMCA 5, was built in Nanterre between 1939 and 1948. The in line 570cc engine produced a remarkable fuel consumption of 110km on only 5 litres of petrol. The car had a four speed gearbox, independent suspension, drum brakes and a 12v electrical system. Pre-war production slowed due to industrial action and German occupation. Eventually, the car was delisted in 1949 and replaced by the SIMCA 6.

There was red or dark grey upholstery and fittings, the car had suspension and "prestomatic" steering. Costing 5 Fr. (revalued Francs), the Panhard 24 CT sold in the UK for 7/11. The model came in dark grey, white Bronze and green, as shown in the 1965 catalogue. The 24CT represents Panhard's last production car, with the parent company, Citroën, switching production at its Ivry plant to meet the increasing demand for 2CV vans.Cost 5 Fr available in black, white, bronze, green finish. The French Dinky Fiat 1200 Grande Vue Introduced by French Dinky in 1959, the 91mm long Fiat ‘Grand Vue’ initially had the reference number 24N, which was changed to 531 during the same year. Advertised in the 1959 French Dinky catalogue, as being a two-tone model in green and white, in every subsequent catalogue, the car was shown in Blue and white, with the August 1959, Meccano magazine showing the model in its more familiar metallic brown and cream colour scheme. Mentioned as not having the most attractive of Italian styling, the initial cost of the 1:43 scale model remains unknown, although in 1960, as model 531, catalogues show the cost as 3,75 new francs, about 7/6. The model had plastic windows and concave chrome hubs and smooth white tyres, which the Meccano magazine shows as white-walled. Later models had smooth black tyres.

The Fiat 1200, known in export markets as the ‘Grand Vue’, replaced the Fiat 1100. Although the car’s bodyshell was similar, the steep-sided roof section and large rear window. Production of the 1200 only began when a 4-door vehicle was ready. The car also came onto the market as the 2-door, Fiat 1200 Spider convertible. The car’s four-cylinder engine had power transferred to the wheels through a four-speed gearbox, producing a top speed of 135km/h raised to 140km/h in 1959.

The French Dinky Renault Floride This Renault Floride, first appeared in the 1960 catalogue. Two years earlier, Renault unveiled the car itself as the Dauphine GT, at the Geneva Motor show, but by October 1958, at the Paris Motor show, they had re-badged it as the Floride, only to change the name, again, when the car sold in Britain and the USA. The car became the Caravelle said to avoid alienating buyers in Florida. The 97mm long model had window glass, suspension and spun hubs, but no internal fittings. Renault realised that a beautiful woman, like film-star Brigitte Bardot, photographed with their vehicle would associate her with a beautiful car. Photographing her in St. Tropez, posed on the Renault Floride ensured that internationally the car became a motoring icon. The French Dinky Ford Taunus 17M Saloon The 1962 French Dinky catalogue, announced the introduction of the 2-door Ford Taunus 17M (559) to its range. The 104mm long saloon car cost 4, 75 Fr. (new Francs), about 8/6. The fine casting ensured that the name Taunus was clearly visible, front and rear. Finger-tip steering, suspension, a red interior with seating included a white steering wheel. A choice of three colours included white, yellow and a metallic dark fawn.
The real 2-door, Ford Taunus, named after Germany's Taunus Mountains, was part of a series of Cortina-like vehicles, with the French Dinky version based on the model produced between 1960 and 1964. The Taunus replaced the Ford Eifel. Köln and Rheinland, with itself being replaced by the Cortina's successors, the Ford Sierra and the larger Granada.
Generally, the Ford Taunus provided a greater interior width than most other German mid-range vehicles of its time. It was about 6 mph faster than earlier models and came in three engine sizes, 1.5, 1.7 and 1.8 litres. A Ford, straight-4 was the standard engine. Although later versions had a Cologne-built, Ford V-6. The French Dinky Renault R8 Gordini Advertised in the second edition of the 1968 French Dinky catalogue, French Dinky introduced the Renault R8 Gordini in 1969.

French Dinky introduced the Renault R8 Gordini in 1969. At 93mm in length, the model cost 9Fr. (New Francs), about 18/-. This sporty version of Renault's small family car distinguished itself with its blue paintwork and two white stripes across the bonnet, roof and rear engine compartment. Normally, the model displayed race number 36 on the front doors, but not on the bonnet. French Dinky issued some models without a race number. The Renault R8 featured plastic windows, seating, suspension, jewelled head and spot lights and a driver in a yellow overall.

In 1969, French Dinky also produced a yellow or mustard coloured limited edition, the 1414HC. This version had all the features of the Gordini, without stripes and race numbers and frequently came unmanned.

In 1964, the Renault R8 Gordini replaced the highly successful Renault Dauphine and production continued through to 1970, when the R12 replaced the R8 and R10. The R8 came with four different sized engines, from 956cc to 1289cc and with either a 3,4 or 5-speed gearbox.

Known as 'The Socerer', racing legend, Amedee Gordini's name provided the brand name for the R8. In 1946, he founded a motor racing company, which had a successful profile in Formula 1 and 2 as well as in the Le Mans 24 hour race between 1950 and 1956. During 1969, Gordini established Renault's sports division and eventually, his firm became fully integrated into the Renault company. Today, Renault retains the name Gordini to show the sporting heritage of its Clio, Twingo and Wing vehicles.

The French Dinky Peugeot 304 Saloon During 1969, French Dinky introduced the Peugeot 304 berline (saloon). At 96mm in length, the model cost 14Fr. (New Francs), about 28/- or £1, 8/-. The model was only issued in white, with suspension, red seating, plastic windows, a steering wheel and opening front doors. The model was withdrawn in 1971.

Between 1974 and 1978, Dinky produced a variant, 1428E, which signified its Spanish origin. This version had a distinctive green metallic finish with all the specified features of the French model, but at the higher cost of 18Fr. (New Francs), about £1, 16/-. The Spanish version was withdrawn in 1978.

The introduction of the model 304 matched the production of the vehicle itself. Between 1969 and 1980, just over 1 million 304 vehicles were produced in its 2 and 4-door versions with its 1.3 litre engine. Peugeot identified a gap in the car market for a mid-sized saloon and unveiled the 304 at the Paris Motor Show in 1969. Pininfarina styled the car's exterior and Peugeot installed front wheel drive and disc brakes. The ride and road handling bettered most contemporary vehicles. Based on the Peugeot 204 and its 1288cc engine, the cars were so successful that the basic chassis remained in production for around 24 years.
