Dinky 23a Racing Car

The Dinky Racing Car Introduced in 1933, this model, which is also known as ‘the small racing car’, holds Dinky toys production record for a period of 22 years. Issued in 1933 as a lead model, the car’s original reference number, ‘23’, had the suffix ‘a’ added in 1935. In 1934, the lead model, 23a/1, did not have a driver and the manifold was set for a four-cylinder engine and a fishtail exhaust pipe. Dinky modified the die and during December 1934, the driver’s head was added along with a manifold to reflect the car’s six-cylinder engine. On each side of this version race numbers were on raised bosses. Later, the number bosses disappear and the bonnet shape was modified. There were two styles of decoration and several colours were applied: red, blue, white and silver. Advertised in the November and December 1934 editions of the Meccano Magazine, these early versions had small white tyres and cost 6d. From late 1934 onwards, the model also appeared in French Dinky catalogues, with the same reference number 23a. In 1936, the cost of the model fell from 3.50 old francs to 2.00fr.

In 1937, Dinky replaced the lead with Zamak. The new model, 23a/2, 90mm long was issued with a range of race numbers, from 1-6. In 1939, the model was withdrawn and replaced by 23a/3, which was renumbered 220, before its final deletion in 1956. After the Second World War, the model failed to appear in any further French catalogues.

The real-life origins of this model appear to be unknown, although the model’s styling sets it in the era of racing at the Brooklands circuit. Indeed, the model bares a close resemblance to the 2.4 litre Napier Railton in which John Cobb set a circuit record of 143.44mph in 1935. However the ‘History of British Dinky Toys 1934-1964’ by Cecil Gibson on p.13 states: ‘In shape it is very reminiscent of the record-breaking M.G. EX-127 used by Eyston in 1933. This was a blown 4-cylinder 750 cc with no external exhaust I think (which would fit in with my first variant). The later six-exhaust versions I take to represent an M.G. Magnette which had a very similar body originally to its 4-cylinder predecessor.

Introduced in 1933, deleted in 1956. Sold in the USA for 20 cents.Cost 6d available in silver & red, red & silver, blue & silver finish. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 23c Mercedes Racing Car

The Dinky Mercedes Racing Car In July 1936, The Meccano Magazine announced the launch of the Dinky Toy's Mercedes-Benz racing car, 23c. The magazine advertised the racing car for the nine months following in the Dinky Toys spread. The 93mm long Mercedes-Benz model came in a range of colours: red, blue, yellow, light green, silver and a light blue. Originally and with smooth hubs and a clipped baseplate, the model cost 8 old pence. In 1939, the price increased to 10 old pence and by the last time the model was advertised in the magazine, in December 1947, the model cost 1/8. The baseplate was only riveted after 1938. The model's tyres also changed over the years, with pre-war models having black round treaded tyres on smooth hubs, while in post-war times, black herringbone tyres were mounted on black ridged hubs. A variety of race numbers were applied to the model, from 1-6. In 1950, the model's die was in France and the model was produced for the export market only. In 1952, the die was due to return to the UK from France, but it did not and therefore, the model was effectively withdrawn from 1950.

In reality, the Daimler-Benz designed the car for racing in the 1934 Grand Prix season. The team behind the design were Hans Nibel, Max Sailer, Albert Heess and Max Wagner and included several revolutionary and weight lightening features, such as the 'U'-shaped pressed steel chassis and double wishbone suspension. In 1934, the car, a Mercedes-Benz W25, won its first outing at the Nurburgring, Nordschiefe. The 3.4 litre W25, with its 5-speed gearbox, won four other major races, the Eifelrennen, the Coppa Acerbo, and the Spanish and Italian Grand Prixs. The Mercedes W25, even with its later and larger 4.3 litre engine, suitably replaced its predecessor, a heavier 7 litre car designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Driven by Tazio Nuvolari, Rudolf Caracciola, Manfred von Brauchitsch and Luigi Fagioli. 1935, was a good season for the Mercedes W25 and the car achieved nine Grand Prix wins. Success came to an end, when Mercedes fitted the car with the larger 4.3 litre engine, which proved unreliable.

Introduced in 1936, the model was withdrawn in 1950. Cost -/8 available in blue, silver finish. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 23d Auto-Union Racing Car

The Dinky Auto-Union Racing Car Launched twice in the United Kingdom and once, in France, the Auto Union racing car, 23d, first appeared in 1936. The pre-war version had no driver and a baseplate clipped into position, although some later pre-war models did have a driver and a round riveted baseplate. In 1936, the 100mm long model cost 7 old pence, which rose to 23 old pence, 1/11, by the time of the 1946, post-war relaunch.

In the UK version, rear axles extended through the rear wheel cowlings, which did not occur on the French model; mountings were within the cowlings. The ribbed wheel hubs replaced the earlier smooth type and were fitted with black herringbone tyres. Round rivets attached post-war baseplates. While in France, models had a single, sunken, central rivet. In the UK, the racing car came in a range of colours, silver, blue, red, green and yellow. Light green was the only colour used for the French version. The models carried a range of race numbers, 1-6.

In 1935, Auto Union built the actual 16-cylinder racing car for speed trials. Over a flying kilometre, the car reached 316 km/h.

Launched in the UK during 1936 and re-launched in 1946, the model was withdrawn in 1938 and deleted in 1950. In France, the Auto Union racing car was launched in 1950 and deleted in 1952.Cost -/7 available in light blue, blue, green, silver, red, yellow finish. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 23f Alfa Romeo Racing Car

The Dinky Alfa Romeo Racing Car In August 1953, the Meccano Magazine announced, as newly introduced, the Alfa-Rameo, 23f, racing car, noting that the actual vehicle had achieved considerable success in road and track events. Finished in red, Italy’s international racing colour, the model had a driver built into the casting. The driver had a white painted overall and helmet. Sturdy axles and ribbed wheel hubs, with 20mm black or grey round treaded tyres ensured that the model had good running. The model details the cars long exhaust pipes on the of-side, which are painted silver. On the rear cowling, the model carries the race number,’8’. Initially, the model cost 3/1, which was reduced to 3/- after only a few months. In 1954, the model was renumbered, 232, and ultimately, deleted in 1964.

Based on the Alfa-Romeo 159, the F1 car won the World Driver’s Championship (1950), driven by Nino Farina. In 1951, Juan Manuel Fangio won driving the Alfretti 159, with its powerful 420 bhp engine. Such power was achieved at the cost high fuel consumption, with the car consuming 125-175 litres per 100 km. Facing stiff competition from Ferrari, a former employee of Alfa-Romeo, the company withdrew from racing after the Italian government refused to fund further developments of the car. Their withdrawal was almost inevitable, because the company had a small budget and relied on pre-war technology, notably its use of 9 engine blocks.Cost 3/1 available in red finish. The Dinky H.W.M. Racing Car In May 1953, the Meccano Magazine advertised the introduction of the HWM racing car, 23j. A follow-up article in June explained the HWM name, an abbreviation of the designers and constructor, Hersham and Walton Motors. Costing 2/11, the 3 7/8th inch long had a driver built into the model's casting. The driver had a white overall and helmet. Like all the models in this series, the HWM had good running, due to its sturdy axles, ribbed wheel hubs and large 20mm, grey round treaded tyres. The car carried the race number, '7', in yellow on either side of the rear cowling. In 1954, the HWM, 23j, was renumbered 235 and withdrawn in 1964.

Based at Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, the actual car was designed by Hersham and Walton Motor's co-owner, John Heath and driven by business partner, George Abecassis, who achieved remarkable success in sports car and F2 races. HWM raced between 1946 and 1948, the first British team to achieve international success after the Second World War. Running on a shoestring budget, throughout the seven year life of the team, they built less than two dozen cars and still managed to race in over twenty events across Europe. The team was fortunate to have the famous race mechanics, Alfonso Koveleski and Alf Framise but, the cars, with their Alta engines, soon became outclassed and, following the death of John Heath, the HWM works team stopped racing.

Today, HWM is owned by Mike Harding, an ex-Aston Martin man and his company is the longest established Aston Martin retailer. The company trades under the names of HWM Aston Martin and HWM Alfa-Romeo.Cost 2/11 available in Light Green finish at 1:38 scale. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 23K Talbot-Lago Racing Car

The Dinky Talbot-Lago Racing Car In September 1953 edition of the Meccano Magazine Dinky Toys announced the introduction of the Talbot-Lago, 23k, which was launch simultaneously in France, where it was French Dinky’s first new model to be advertised in the Meccano Magazine after the Second World War. The Talbot-Lago racing car, 23k.

Costing 2/6 and noted for its fine detail, the 104mm long model, at a scale of 1:38, was in the blue of the French national racing colour. The French version had a vital significance, because it replicated France’s first post-war racing car. However, the smaller French model, 23K, had a length of just 93mm, reflecting its 1:43 scale. The British version carried water-based transfers with the race numbers 1-6; with age, the French spirit-based transfers now leave a yellow film between the numbers. The models had blue, concave wheel hubs and grey 20mm or occasionally black tyres on the British version; black, 11.190mm tyres were on the French model. The 20mm front tyres did not extend beyond the front of the model as they did on the French model, 23H. The British driver adopts a more upright driving position than the lower driving position in the French model. The exhaust, bonnet louvres and bonnet badge are different, with the French version more closely reflecting the actual Talbot bonnet badge.

Dinky and French dinky modelled 23k and 23H, on the Talbot-Lago T26C, single-seat racing car, which had a box chassis, un-supercharged 4.5 litres straight six engine and a 4-speed, Wilson pre-selector gearbox. The chassis and gearbox were derived from Talbot’s 1930s racing cars. The T26C made its racing debut in the 1948 Monaco Grand Prix, finishing second. Driven by Louis Chiron, further achievements followed, including the 1949 Belgium Grand Prix and in a two-seat version, they won the 1950, Le Mans 24 hour race. Louis Rosier and Jean-Louis Rosier drove the car.

Dinky 23N Maserati Racing Car

The Dinky Maserati Racing Car In June, 1953, the Maserati, 23N, became the fifth in the series of new racing cars introduced during that year. The 3 ¾ inch long model cost 2/8 and was finished in the racing colours of Switzerland. The red painted bodywork has a white flash running down the bonnet to the grille. The model possesses the robust axle mountings typical of the series, ribbed wheel hubs and grey or black 20mm round treaded tyres. The car carries a race number, ‘9’, on either side of the rear cowl. By the late autumn of 1953, the price of the model fell to 2/6 in line with other models in the series. In 1954, the Maserati was renumbered, 231 and as such it remained in production until 1964, when it was deleted.

From 1947-1956, Maserati built racing cars in Italy. The Dinky Toys model was based on their 4CLT/48 racing car, which had a 1.5 litre supercharged engine and the ‘T’ standing for tubular chassis. The engine produced 260bhp. Designed by Ernesto Maserati, developed by Giocchino Colombo and constructed by Medaro Fantuzzi, the car built on some of the early work done by the Maserati brothers, who developed the car’s 4-cylinder in line engine. The car was nicknamed the “sanremo” from the name of its first race in 1948. British driver, Reg Parnell, and Italian, Villoresi won five races during that season. In 1949, the team were joined by Juan Manuel Fangio and Baron Toulo de Graffenried, who won the British Grand Prix. In 1950, at Monaco, Louis Chiron drove to third place. The Maserati had several notable successes with the car, including a 1st and 3rd place in the Monaco Grand Prix (1956), although not with the Dinky model but with the 2.5 litre 250F model. Later versions of the car were dogged by engine failures.

Maserati stopped building racing cars in 1956 for the official works team which stopped racing at the end of the 1967 season, but they continued to build cars for "privateers". .

Dinky Toys use of the Swiss national racing colours for the Maserati model, 23N, came from the successes of ‘The Scuderi Enrico Platé’ (The Enrico Platé stable), a Swiss-based team, who raced Maserati cars during the early 1950s. During this period, the team had three main drivers: Prince Bira of Thailand, Harry Schell and Baron Toulo de Graffenried. The Platé team recognised the shortcomings of the Maserati and their modified cars had a good measure of success racing in F2. In 1953, the team experienced financial difficulties and during 1954, Enrico Platé died in a racing accident in Buenos Aires.Cost 2/8 available in Red finish at 1:38 scale. Dinky in detail...

The Dinky Midget Car Racer The pre war version was longer with no driver.

The second in the series of small cars, a racing car has been called an MG Midget, but is more like an MG R-type, which frequently raced on the Brooklands circuit. The sports car is named as an MG midget and reflects the beginnings of a long line of cars and models bearing that name. The small cars series were at a 1:76 scale and were first issued between 1936 and 1941 and then, after the war, from 1945. Initially, each sold for 3d (pence), with the gift set of all three costing 9d.

The actual car, often referred to as the Midget racer, was more likely to have been an MG R-type, which had an overhead camshaft version of the 1928 Morris Minor and Wolseley 10 engine. The car had a supercharger and 4-speed pre-selector gearbox, Y shaped steel chassis, with wishbone and torsion bar suspension, lever arm shock absorbers and cable operated drum brakes.Cost 3d available in silver, yellow, red finish at 1:76 scale. Dinky 240 Cooper Racing Car

The Dinky Cooper Racing Car In March 1963, the Meccano Magazine announced the introduction of Dinky Toys new series of racing cars. The second in the series, the Cooper-Climax, F1, model 240, went on sale the following month, after the launch of model 242, the F1, Ferrari.

At a 1:43 scale, the 31/4 inch (83mm) long racing car cost 3/11. Finished in powder blue, with white stripes down the nose and with the race number, twenty, the car had suspension, a plastic windscreen and a yellow helmeted driver wearing a white overall. The car’s blue engine-cowl lifts off to reveal the car’s Coventry Climax engine. Although the model was initially made for the UK market, Dinky Toys intended to make the series available in overseas markets throughout the world and the Cooper racing car appeared in French Dinky’s 1966 catalogue as model 240L.

The actual Cooper-Climax T53, F1 car, produced in Surbiton, Surrey, by John Cooper, began a motor racing revolution, which continues through to, today. Designer Owen Maddock introduced the previously unheralded rear-engine racing car. Initially developed for the Indianapolis 500, the car was driven to success by such famous drivers as Roy Salvadori, Bruce McClaren, Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss. Interest in John Cooper’s car was also shown by a young Bernie Ecclestone. In 1958, the 2litre Coventry-Climax engine, mounted in a Cooper chassis was found to be not powerful enough. However, in 1959, when the car returned to the track with the more powerful 2.5 litre engine, Jack Brabham drove the car to success in the US Grand Prix, at Sebring and went on to become the world champion.

Engine manufacturer, Coventry-Climax, producer of Britain’s first forklift truck (Dinky model 401/597) was purchased by Jaguar Cars and subsequently, British Leyland, where it became part of the ill-fated Special Products Division, which the company closed early on in its long decline into oblivion.

A former works Manager at Cooper’s racing company once said, that although the pay was poor, “ you’d never have as much fun anywhere else” – a magnificent epitaph to the firm.

While Dinky introduced the Cooper-Climax, F1, racing car in April 1963, it was French Dinky who finally deleted the model, 240L, in 1970.Cost 3/11 available in blue finish at 1:43 scale. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 241 Lotus Racing Car

The Dinky Lotus Racing Car Introduced in April 1963, the Lotus racing car, 241, became the third model in Dinky’s new series of F1 cars. The model cost 3/11 and was 3¼ inches (83mm) long. The green race colour was the normal livery of Team Lotus. The model had four wheel suspension, windscreen, a driver in a white overall and green helmet and a green engine cowl through which the car’s replica Coventry Climax engine could be seen. The model was deleted in 1970.

A South African version was made in a lighter green.

In 1952 by Colin Chapman and Colin Dale formed Lotus Engineering. Lotus cars were born out of Lotus Engineering, whose first factory was in stables, behind the Railway Hotel, in Hornsey London. In 1958, Team Lotus was split off from the core business and so began the engagement in completion from 1958-1994. In 1959, Lotus moved to a new factory in Cheshunt and the former RAF base at Hethel, Norfolk. Their cars were characterised by light weight and fine handling.

In 1960, Team Lotus won its first Grand Prix, at Monaco. Stirling Moss won the race driving a Lotus 18. During the 1963 season, Jim Clarke drove a Lotus 25 and won Lotus’s first World Championship. Sadly, Jim Clarke died in a tragic accident at the Hockenheim circuit, driving an F2, Lotus 48. Graham Hill restored Lotus’s winning ways during 1968 and subsequent successes included Grand Prix victories for Jochen Rindt (1970), Emerson Fittipaldi (1972) and Mario Andretti (1978).

Colin Chapman died in 1982, aged 54, with seven World Championships to his name. Since then, Team Lotus has had a variety of owners, including GM, Artoli/Buggatti and currently, Proton (1996-present). Cost 3/11 available in green finish. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 242 Ferrari Racing Car

The Dinky Ferrari Racing Car The Ferrari racing car. In March 1963, the Meccano Magazine announced the introduction of its new racing car series and the first model in that series, the Ferrari 156, F1, model 242 went on sale in the same month. Subsequently, Dinky introduced three further models in the series.

At a 1:42 scale, the 3.5 inch (89mm) long, 1.75 inch wide and 7/8ths inch high racing car cost 3/11. Finished in Ferrari’s famous red livery, the black, prancing horse logo was on either side of the car’s ‘Shark-nose’ cowl. The model had four wheel suspension and a removable rear cowl, which gave access to the detailed mid-engine. A plastic windscreen surrounds the driver wearing a white overall and green helmet.

In 1961, Ferrari replaced their Dino racing car with the Ferrari 156. The enforced reduction of engine capacity from 2.5 litres to 1.5 litres caused Ferrari some difficulties and the race competition proved fierce, with challenges from BRM’s Graham Hill, Lotus’s Jim Clarke and American Dan Gurney driving for Porsche.

Designed by Carlo Chiti, the Ferrari 156, ‘Shark-nose’ made its debut in 1956, at the Monaco Grand Prix. During that season, the American, Phil Hill, drove the car to the world championship. Other famous drivers won grand prix races in the ‘Shark-nose’, American, Richie Ginther, Britain’s John Surtees and Italy’s Lorenzo Bandini, who won the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix, the last race to be won by a Ferrari 156, before it was replaced by the Ferrari Aero.

Introduced in March 1963, and shown in Dinky catalogue No5 in May 1969 for 4/11 the Ferrari racing car was deleted from the French Dinky catalogue at the end of 1970, when it was replaced by model 1422 a more modern Ferrari F1 car. In the UK, the car was withdrawn in 1971. Cost 3/11 available in red, light red finish at 1:42 scale. Dinky in detail...

Dinky 243 BRM Racing Car

The Dinky BRM Racing Car In April 1964, the Meccano Magazine introduced the fourth model in Dinky’s new racing car series. The magazine used its colourful back page spread to announce the introduction of the yellow BRM F1 racing car, which was not in the green metallic colour used for the actual model. Only the engine cowl, with its see-through air intake had the yellow colour scheme. Costing 3/11 the 3¼ inch (83mm) long model had 4-wheel suspension, a windscreen and driver in a white overall and red helmet. Later versions of the model had not slots for the windscreen. By 1969, the Dinky catalogue showed the increased cost of the model to be 4/11. Released in 1964, the model was withdrawn in 1971.

In 1945, Richard Mays CBE founded British Racing Motors (BRM) which raced F1 cars from 1950-1977. They entered 197 grand prix races and won 17, including the 1962 world championship and constructor’s championship. Graham Hill OBE drove their BRM 57/8, which was so successful that it remained in production in 1963, when American, Richie Ginther, achieved second place in the Monaco Grand Prix. Other major successes occurred for BRM during the 1964, 1965 and 1971 seasons. BRM cars used a variety of engines: 1.5 V16; 2.5 litre in line; 1.5cc Coventry-Climax; 1.9 and 2.11 V8 3.01 H16 and the powerful 3.01 V12. While BRM’s greatest achievements occurred under Graham Hill, a number of other famous racers drove for the company: Jo Bonnier, Ron Flockhart, Dan Gurney, Mike Hawthorn, Nikki Lauder, Clay Regazzoni, Jackie Stewart and John Surtees.

Released in 1964, the model was withdrawn in 1971. Cost 3/11 available in green finish. Dinky in detail...

The Dinky Matra F1 Advertised as new in the first edition of the 1969 French Dinky catalogue, the 95.5mm long Matra F1, 3 litre racing car (1417) cost fr.13.50, about 25/-. The French Blue car carried the name of its driver Jean Paul Beltoise and the adverts for the sponsors autollant and ELF, Essence Lubricont Fraincaise, with the race number 17 and a plastic driver. Launched in 1969, the model was withdrawn in 1972.

In 1964, the aero-space engineering firm, ‘Engins Matra’, formed a subsidiary, called ‘Matra Sport’. The team rapidly progressed from F3 to F2 by working with Ken Tyrrell and ELF with the aim of becoming a Grand Prix outfit. By 1968, ‘Matra Sport’ was ready for its highly successful 1969 season, using the Matra MS 11/ MRO F1 car, with its 3 litre, V12, Cosworth engine in a monocoque chassis. This vehicle provided the inspiration for the French Dinky model. Subsequently, Jackie Stewart won the 1974 World Championship in a Matra.

French Dinky 23J Ferrari Racing Car

The French Dinky Ferrari Racing Car In the 1956 catalogue, French Dinky Toys advertised the Ferrari Racing Car, 23J, as a new model available in July. In the October edition of the Meccano Magazine, a short article outlined the features of French Dinky’s second post-war racing car, which the company released in November and then, advertised the model, once again, in December.

In Ferrari Red, at a scale of 1/43, the 102mm long racing car had yellow race numbers, 1-6, on the rear cowling, red ribbed wheel hubs and initially, a smooth radiator grille. In 1957, French Dinky introduced variant 23J/2, which had a chequered grille and ‘chrome’ wheel hubs. The tyres were 20mm round treaded. Both versions cost 265 old francs, about 6/6. Introduced in 1956, withdrawn in 1959.

The model was based upon Ferrari’s 500, which had a 2.0 litre engine. Based on much of Lancia’s technology, the car achieved notable success in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio, who won his third consecutive world title and, commanded five of the top eight placings for the season. Only Stirling Moss’s Maserati provided serious competition.Cost 256Fr. at 1:43 scale. French Dinky in detail...

French Dinky 23H Talbot-Lago

The French Dinky Talbot-Lago In 1953, long after the Second World War, the French version of the Meccano Magazine was re-introduced. In the October 1953 edition, the magazine announced French Dinky’s newest models. Among them, the Talbot-Lago racing car, 23H/1, which had been trailed in the 1952 French Dinky catalogue, had appeared in September. There is no price listed for the model, but a similar model in the series retailed for 290 old francs, about 6/-, considerably more expensive than the 3/- for the British model.

Noted for its fine detail, the 93mm long model, at a scale of 1:43, was in the blue of the French national racing colour and faithfully replicated France’s first post-war racing car. A British version of the model, 23K, appeared at the same time, but the length of the model was 104mm, reflecting its 1:38 scale. The French car came in a trade box, with the models carrying spirit-based race numbers 1-6; with age, these spirit-based transfers now leave a yellow film, between the numbers. The models had blue, concave wheel hubs and black, 11.190mm tyres on the French version, with grey 20mm and occasionally black tyres on the British version. The relatively larger French tyres for the size of the model result in the front tyres extending beyond the front of the model. The French driver adopts a lower driving position than the more upright position in the British model. The exhaust, bonnet louvres and bonnet badge are different, with the French version more closely reflecting the actual Talbot bonnet badge.

In 1959, French Dinky renumbered the model, 510, and gave it chrome wheel hubs but then, they promptly withdrew the car from their catalogue.

French dinky modelled the Talbot-Lago, 23H, on the company’s T26C, single-seat racing car, which had a box chassis, un-supercharged 4.5 litres straight six engine and a 4-speed, Wilson pre-selector gearbox. Cost 290Fr available in blue finish at 1:38 scale. French Dinky in detail...

The French Dinky Surtees TS5

From John Morris:
During my childhood and teenage years, I lived in London's suburbs on the Surrey-Kent county boundary, unknown to me that a hero, John Surtees, had been born in the nearby village of Tatsfield, in Surrey. The village stands on the crest of the North Downs, overlooking Westerham, in Kent (the location of Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill's home) and beyond towards Edenbridge, where Surtees built his motor racing base.

John Surtees was the son of a south London motorcycle dealer. Between 1952 and 1960, he achieved 38 motorcycling championship wins, including 24 podium places in the 500cc World Motorcycling Championship. He was overall champion in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960. In 1960, he turned to Formula 1 motor racing and, in 1964, became world champion. He remains the only person to win world championships on both two and four wheels. His Surtees Racing Organisation spent nine seasons involved in Formula 1, from 1970-78. In 1968, the late James Garner, the actor, entered Formula 5000 with his AIR team. John Surtees struck a deal to manufacture the car. The American version used an AMC engine, while in Britain a Ford Cosworth V8 provided the power. Built at the Poole factory of designer Len Terry, later versions of the car were built at the Surtees works in Slough and subsequently, at Edenbridge. The car was rechristened the TS5, standing for Terry-Surtees 5000. In America, the car was called the Garner TS5.

During 1971, the year of John Surtees's retirement from racing, French Dinky introduced model 1433, the Surtees TS5 Formula 1 racing car. The 95mm long model retailed at 15,50 Fr. (new Francs), about £1, 11/-. In red and white, the works colours, the highly detailed model had race number decals, number 14.Cost 15.50 Fr available in red finish. French Dinky in detail...

Marklin 5521/1 Mercedes Benz Rennwagen

The Marklin Mercedes Benz Rennwagen This record car was basically an “ordinary” Mercedes-Benz W25 Grand Prix racing car with cockpit Cover and without front brakes. In 1934 they drove it to records in Hungary, not only reaching 320 km/h, but also menacing temperatures in the cockpit! Two of these racing cars were then at the formula-free race in May 1935 at the AVUS Berlin, this time with front brakes and a flatter hood.

One of the two released by MÄRKLIN in 1935 as part of their new series “Miniature Cars” was based on the Mercedes-Benz W25 record car with the flatter cockpit cover and model number 5521/1.

The model is still quite common today, sometimes with nickel-plated iron rims, sometimes with raw, grey die-cast zinc rims.

There were apparently two different molds and two different bases. The early models featured a slightly narrower radiator than the later ones. The body is also different where the axles exit. The bottoms are smooth, embossed with "MÄRKLIN" and "Made in Germany". The base plate was initially fastened with an elongated pressing to the lower edge of the body.Later the base plate was attached manually by driving several rough notches into the lower body edge. Neither method worked well and the base is often missing today.

Another modification concerned the base plate itself. It received an embossed powertrain, in the same style as the streamlined Mercedes-Benz record car 5521/17 released in 1937. The lettering remained “MÄRKLIN” and “Made in Germany” as before and it was still fixed by hand with notches.

In addition to the usual silver, the model also has white and blue versions, these are very rare.

The boxes are either the typical red individual boxes, or grey, neutral, dealer boxes containing six models.
