The Marklin Mercedes Benz Rennwagen. This record car was basically an “ordinary” Mercedes-Benz W25 Grand Prix racing car with cockpit Cover and without front brakes. In 1934 they drove it to records in Hungary, not only reaching 320 km/h, but also menacing temperatures in the cockpit! Two of these racing cars were then at the formula-free race in May 1935 at the AVUS Berlin, this time with front brakes and a flatter hood.

One of the two released by MÄRKLIN in 1935 as part of their new series “Miniature Cars” was based on the Mercedes-Benz W25 record car with the flatter cockpit cover and model number 5521/1.

The model is still quite common today, sometimes with nickel-plated iron rims, sometimes with raw, grey die-cast zinc rims.

There were apparently two different molds and two different bases. The early models featured a slightly narrower radiator than the later ones. The body is also different where the axles exit. The bottoms are smooth, embossed with "MÄRKLIN" and "Made in Germany". The base plate was initially fastened with an elongated pressing to the lower edge of the body.Later the base plate was attached manually by driving several rough notches into the lower body edge. Neither method worked well and the base is often missing today.

Another modification concerned the base plate itself. It received an embossed powertrain, in the same style as the streamlined Mercedes-Benz record car 5521/17 released in 1937. The lettering remained “MÄRKLIN” and “Made in Germany” as before and it was still fixed by hand with notches.

In addition to the usual silver, the model also has white and blue versions, these are very rare.

The boxes are either the typical red individual boxes, or grey, neutral, dealer boxes containing six models.

The original price was R.M. -.60 . It was available in silver, white, blue finish. Released as Marklin 5521/1 in 1935
