French Dinky 14 Triporteur
The French Dinky Triporteur
In the 1935 catalogue, French Dinky launched the Triporteur and re-launched the model after the Second World War in 1949. Between 1936 and 37, The French Meccano Magazine advertised the Triporteur in a series of illustrations, which included the early blue tinted pictures and a composite of models in the 1937 catalogue. The model remained in the French Dinky catalogue until its withdrawal in late 1953.
French Dinky produced three iterations of the Triporteur. From 1935-39, the 70mm model cost 5 francs (about 6d.) and was distinguished by its Dunlop tyres. From 1940-49, the same model had metal wheels and still cost 5fr. Between 1950 and 1953, the third and final iteration cost 130 fr. (almost 3/-), had ribbed wheel hubs and M-type tyres, which were either black or white depending on the colour of the casting, either red or green. The model was deleted towards the end of 1953.
The French Dinky Triporter, 14, is based on the Peugeot t55 cargo bike, which had a box resting upon a chassis between two front wheels, with its rotating body pivoting around a central axis. At the rear the 125 cc, single cylinder, two-stroke motorcycle engine produced 4.5 horsepower and would carry a 150Kg load on 550x85 tyres at a top speed of 50 Km/H, with a fuel consumption of 3 litres per 100 kilometres. Renowned for its economy, the Triporteur was popular throughout France and the Netherlands. After 20 years in the Peugeot catalogue, the Triporteur was finally removed in 1958.
Cost 5 Fr. available in red, green finish. French Dinky in detail...
French Dinky 24F Peugeot 403 Estate
The French Dinky Peugeot 403 Estate
The very small cast number 403 on the nose of the bonnet shows the level of detail on this model.
On the box the model is called ‘Familiale 403 Peugeot’, however, embossed in the base plate it says ‘403 Peugeot U5’.
The 1st. version always has the early convex wheels, two tiny rear overriders, black tyres and one of two shades of light blue.
The 2nd. version has smooth rear bumpers and the overriders were removed.
The 3d. version, renumbered no. 525 in 1959 only, has concave, hollow wheels, is painted greyish-blue only and the later ones may have white tyres.

French Dinky 24B Peugeot 403 Berline
The French Dinky Peugeot 403 Berline
In the 1956 French Dinky catalogue, they announced the introduction of the black painted, Peugeot 403 Berline (saloon), 24B to replace the Citroën Traction. When the model appeared in June, to a large advertising campaign in the Meccano Magazine, the bodywork was painted the second colour available, mid-blue. The new model appeared on the magazine’s back page spread throughout the summer months in support of the article that featured in the June edition (p. 19). The advertising campaign was huge for the replacement of the iconic Citroën, French Dinky’s most popular model. The 1957 catalogue showed the new model painted grey and from 1958-1961, the mid-blue version illustrated catalogues. When the model was renumbered, as 521 and now with windows, the sand cream, yellow model featured.
The detailed, 104mm long mode, at a 1:43 scale, cost 205 old francs, about 4/- and although without windows until 1961, the model featured chrome concave wheel hubs and smooth white or black tyres.
The Peugeot 403 Berline made its debut on 20th April, 1955, at the Trocadero Palace, in Paris. Peugeot manufactured the 403 Berline at the Sochaux plant, near Mulhouse, between 1955 and 1966. In the months before the launch, un-badged versions of the vehicle were driven around the streets of Sochaux, virtually unnoticed by motoring journalists who rarely ventured to this quiet part of France. The vehicle proved extremely reliable. The car came in three engine sizes; 1290cc, 1468cc and as an 1816cc diesel. The car had a four-speed gearbox, with a column change. The car included a sunroof and newly introduced, safer, radial tyres as standard fittings. Although initially fitted with traficators on the pillars between the front and rear doors, these were soon replaced by flashing indicators. Over 1 million 403s rolled off the production line, making the car Peugeot’s first to break through the 1 million mark. In 1966, Peugeot replaced the 403 with the even more successful 404.
The highly successful 403 Berline had an equally successful French Dinky equivalent, model 24B. Introduced in 1955, the model was withdrawn, as model 521, in 1961.Cost 205Fr. available in grey, blue, yellow finish at 1:43 scale. French Dinky in detail...
French Dinky 24L Peugeot 402 saloon
The French Dinky Peugeot 402 saloon
In 1939, French Dinky launched the Peugeot 402 taxi, 24L. Without a baseplate, the first issue of the model provided details of its manufacture on the ceiling, “Dinky Toys, Peugeot 402, Fabrique En France, Par MECCANO”. During the immediate post-war era, the model relied upon metal wheels, although from 1947, the model had 17mm diameter rubber tyres. From 1947, the model also had a baseplate, a sheet-metal floor. The fine casting of the 94mm long, Peugeot 402 taxi, allowed the headlights, mounted behind the radiator grille on the actual vehicle, to be identifiable on the model; the taxi being 1mm long than 24K, the sedan. The model’s colour range included yellow, blue, red and brown, with the two colour models only appearing in brown and cream or royal blue and yellow. The taximeter attached through a hole on the right side of the model was in black, with white and red markings. The front bumper was similarly fixed through a hole at the front. Rear axles have reinforced mountings and above them on each side of the model, Peugeot’s Lion, with its flowing mane, is on each wing. Pre-war versions had white tyres marked, ‘Dunlop’. Boxes for this model remain rare, with many disappearing during the war years. In 1939, the model cost 6.25 old francs, which reduced to 5, 50 fr. in the post-war years, 13/6 reducing to 11/6.
Launched at the Paris Motor Show, in 1935, Peugeot manufactured the actual vehicle at their Sochaux plant, near the Swiss border. Peugeot produced approximately 75,000 of these large family cars, which were well-suited to their use as a taxi. Between 1935 -38, the 4-door sedan had a straight-4, 1991 cc engine, which Peugeot up-graded to 2142 cc engine, between 1938-42. The car’s all steel body and stream-lined design made the model a popular family car. Production ceased in 1942.
Replica models can be distinguished by the lack of a spare wheel cover; replicas have a boot, which existed on later models of the actual vehicle, but not on the French Dinky model.Cost 6.25Fr. available in yellow, blue, red, brown, brown & cream, royal blue & yellow finish. French Dinky 511 Peugeot 204 Cabriolet
The French Dinky Peugeot 204 Cabriolet
In the second edition of the 1967, French Dinky catalogue, the Peugeot 204 Cabriolet appeared as a new model. Numbered 511, the 1/43 scale model made of Zamak and plastic came in two colours, red or pale blue. The model had opening doors, folding seats, suspension and an opening bonnet, which displayed the replica engine. The 87mm long model had spun hubs and soft black tyres. Costing 9fr. (new francs), about £1, the car was launched in 1968 and withdrawn in 1971.
Secretly known as project D12, Peugeot built the actual 204 Cabriolet at their Sochaux plant. Launched in Paris, on the 23rd April 1965, the 204 became France’s best-selling car between 1969 and 1971. Designed by Battista Pininfarina, the car came in five body styles, had a 4-speed gearbox, with an old fashioned column change. The car offered three different types of powertrain: 1.1L 14 petrol engine; 1.3L diesel 14 between 1968 and 1973; and, a 1.4 L diesel 14, from 1973-1976. The transverse overhead cam engine feed the front wheel drive through a distinctive gearbox and differential. The 204 was the first Peugeot to be fitted with disc-brakes. Peugeot fitted an 1130 cc engine in the 204 Cabriolet.Cost 9fr. available in red, blue finish at 1:43 scale. French Dinky in detail...

French Dinky 525 B Peugeot 404 Break
The French Dinky Peugeot 404 Break
The Peugeot 404 [1:1] was styled by Pininfarina and launched in 1960 with the estate coming along in 1962 in three versions, Familial, Break and Commercial.
This die cast model is a Break-type – as marked at the bottom plate –, this Break version had two rows of seats. The Rear seat up and in this Dinky model it is nicely reproduced. It enjoyed several neat features: the backrest of the backseat can be folded using a knurled wheels just ahead of the driver’s side rear wheel and last but not least the opening rear door will clip into the open position firmly holding the door open. About the suspension: some semblance of steering is provided but it is very poor.
** Other versions were as: Pompiers (Fr) = Fire Brigade, Red Cross, Gendarmerie (Fr) = police, Commerciale, La Poste (Fr), etc.
In real car there was a choice between two petrol engines of 1400 and 1500cc and a diesel of 1900cc. This model replaced the Peugeot 403 Estate which had been sold since 1959. available in dark blue finish at 1:43 scale. French Dinky in detail...

French Dinky 570 Peugeot J7 Van
The French Dinky Peugeot J7 Van In 1967, after an eight year gap, French Dinky re-introduced model 570. The new model was not, however, an update of 570/1, the Somua Panhard Parisian bus, but the introduction of a new Peugeot J7 delivery van. Designated 570/2, the Peugeot J7 "Allo Fret" was 108mm long and cost Fr. 17 (new Francs). In the livery of "Allo Fret", a logistics company, the 570/2 version, introduced sliding doors, rear doors that opened and lifted, internal fittings, suspension and jewelled headlights. Its most distinctive feature was the blue plastic roof with an antenna, which was replaced by a white roof in the 1968 modification, 570/3. The model was withdrawn in 1971. Rare variants of the model include the orange, 570A, the Peugeot J7 "Autoroutes" and the 570P, the Peugeot J7 Pompiers. These were withdrawn in 1971 and 1972, respectively.Cost Fr. 17 available in red, blue finish. French Dinky in detail...

French Dinky 1428 Peugeot 304 Saloon
The French Dinky Peugeot 304 Saloon
During 1969, French Dinky introduced the Peugeot 304 berline (saloon). At 96mm in length, the model cost 14Fr. (New Francs), about 28/- or £1, 8/-. The model was only issued in white, with suspension, red seating, plastic windows, a steering wheel and opening front doors. The model was withdrawn in 1971.
Between 1974 and 1978, Dinky produced a variant, 1428E, which signified its Spanish origin. This version had a distinctive green metallic finish with all the specified features of the French model, but at the higher cost of 18Fr. (New Francs), about £1, 16/-. The Spanish version was withdrawn in 1978.
The introduction of the model 304 matched the production of the vehicle itself. Between 1969 and 1980, just over 1 million 304 vehicles were produced in its 2 and 4-door versions with its 1.3 litre engine. Peugeot identified a gap in the car market for a mid-sized saloon and unveiled the 304 at the Paris Motor Show in 1969. Pininfarina styled the car's exterior and Peugeot installed front wheel drive and disc brakes. The ride and road handling bettered most contemporary vehicles. Based on the Peugeot 204 and its 1288cc engine, the cars were so successful that the basic chassis remained in production for around 24 years. A diesel engine powered the estate and 'fourgonette' (van) versions.Cost 14Fr. available in white, metalic green finish. French Dinky in detail...
