French Dinky 29E Autocar ISOBLOC
The French Dinky Autocar ISOBLOC The 1950 French Dinky catalogue announced the September release date for the model of the Isobloc Autocar, 29E/1. Publication of the French Meccano magazine had not yet resumed, after the Second World War and therefore, the retail price of the model remains elusive until publication of the March, 1954 edition of the magazine. An estimate of the price is roughly 95 Fr. (old Francs), almost 2/-. Throughout its production, the Isobloc Autocar always came in trade boxes of 6 models, even though there were 2-3 colour variants. Model 29E/1 came with a:
- 1. Dark green body, with dark green roof and wing panels. Wheel hubs were also green;
- 2. Blue body with cream roof and wing panels. Wheel hubs were blue; and,
- 3. Blue body with silver wing panels. Wheel hubs were also blue.
- 1. Light blue body with silver roof and wing panels and blue wheel hubs;
- 2. Red body with silver roof and wing panels and red wheel hubs.
Joseph Besset built the ISOBLOC autocar at a coachworks in Annonay, within the Ardéche region of France. The plant at Vocance was only a few kilometres away from the birthplace of international haulier, Norbert Dentressangle. Besset's company secured a license from an American firm, GAR Wood, to use their aeronautically engineered, aluminium body structures to create a self-supporting coach body. Using metal beams, the fuselage-like structure possessed strength, lightness and at the same time, created a large cabin space. In 1938 Besset presented a proto-type of his coach at both the Paris and Lyon motor shows. Eventually, ISOBLOC built 3,400 units. The vehicle had one major weakness, its gasoline powered, Ford engine, which ISOBLOC promptly replaced with a Panhard diesel. Twenty years later, the name of ISOBLOC disappears from France's motor industry as it is subsumed into SAVIEM.
During 1950, French Dinky also introduced the Isobloc Autocar, 29/EB, an 'Air France'- badged version. This prototype commercial model was based on the 29E/1, but had a dark blue body and roof, with sky blue wing panels and wheel hubs. Cost 95 Fr. available in silver & red, green, blue & cream, blue & silver, lt. blue & silver finish. French Dinky in detail...
