The Dinky Police Range Rover. The British Land Rover company introduced the Range Rover that would become a very successful utility vehicle. The Range Rover was launched in 1970.

The first-generation Range Rover was produced between 1970 and 1996. It was available only in a 2-door body until 1981.

Various engines could be used such as a 3.5 ltr V8 (3530 cc / 135hp) engine and others. It was also used by Armed Forces and the Police.

This Range Rover was also used by the Dutch National Police ("Rijkspolitie"), with 60 cars between 1973-1984 to patrol at the highways.

Originally the rear window of the 1:1 was as a black frame. Dinky made the first versions without paint at the rear window, so it looked like the real car. It would have made more sense to paint the window surround black, but these were already the days of steady cost-cutting. After version 4 they painted in white. Several different versions in production timeline:

  • 1) light blue interior black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 6 spokes hubs, radio aerial, jewelled headlights, no paint at rear window
  • 2) light blue interior black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 spokes hubs, radio aerial, jewelled headlights, no paint at rear window
  • 3) light blue interior, black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, radio aerial, jewelled headlights, no paint at rear window
  • 4) light blue interior, white steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, no radio aerial, jewelled headlights, white painted rear window
  • 5) dark blue interior, white steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, no radio aerial, jewelled headlights, white painted rear window
  • 6) dark blue interior, white steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with single nut hub covers, no radio aerial, cast headlights, white painted rear window
  • 7) dark blue interior, black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, no radio aerial, cast headlights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
  • 8) light blue interior, black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, no radio aerial, cast headlights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
  • 9) red interior, black steering wheel, plastic speedwheels with 5 nuts hub covers, no radio aerial, cast headlights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
  • 10) red interior, black steering wheel, solid plastic wheels, no radio aerial, cast headlights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
  • 11) light blue interior, black steering wheel, solid plastic wheels, no radio aerial, cast head lights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
  • 12) light blue interior, black steering wheel, unplated solid plastic wheels, no radio aerial, cast head lights, rear lights painted red, white painted rear window
Remarkable is that the different versions had also different numberplates at front and back.

Was also available in GS 294.

Dinky also had a version in dark red marked ‘Fire Service’ (No. 195), a white one – with only one drivers seat plus a stretcher marked 'ambulance' (No. 268) and the civil one – without roof markings (No. 192). It was available in white finish at 1:43 scale. Released as Dinky 254 in 1971 withdrawn as Dinky 254 in 1980.
