The 1962 French Dinky catalogue, announced the introduction of the 2-door Ford Taunus 17M (559) to its range. The 104mm long saloon car cost 4, 75 Fr. (new Francs), about 8/6. The fine casting ensured that the name Taunus was clearly visible, front and rear. Finger-tip steering, suspension, a red interior with seating included a white steering wheel. A choice of three colours included white, yellow and a metallic dark fawn.
The real 2-door, Ford Taunus, named after Germany's Taunus Mountains, was part of a series of Cortina-like vehicles, with the French Dinky version based on the model produced between 1960 and 1964. The Taunus replaced the Ford Eifel. Köln and Rheinland, with itself being replaced by the Cortina's successors, the Ford Sierra and the larger Granada.
Generally, the Ford Taunus provided a greater interior width than most other German mid-range vehicles of its time. It was about 6 mph faster than earlier models and came in three engine sizes, 1.5, 1.7 and 1.8 litres. A Ford, straight-4 was the standard engine.
