Dinky 734 Supermarine Swift

The Dinky Supermarine Swift Released October 1955 with a price of 2/-, reduced to 1/9 by February 1956 a price that remained throughout its production until production was terminated in 1962. Advertised in the July 1958 Meccano Magazine.
In 1953, the real aircraft held the world absolute speed record, 737.7 mph or 1,187km/h. The pilot was Wing Commander Mike Lithgow and the record was held for 8 days. The squadrons: 2 (1956), 4, 56 (1954) and 79 were equipped with Swifts. The aircraft first flew in 1948, but less than 200 were built out of an initial order for 497. The Swift was built as a replacement for the Meteor, but had problems with abrupt pitching and the reheat not working at high altitudes. These problems led to the Swift being grounded for periods, notably after one fatal crash. The plane never really saw action, although it was stationed in Germany during the Cold War, with the Mark 6 used for photo reconnaissance. In short, the Swift was not very successful, was never required as the fall back aircraft for the slightly slower Hawker Hunter and was largely replaced by it.Cost 2/-. Dinky in detail...
